Benefits of traditional knowledge

What are the traditional practices of ensuring water security in the Meghalaya?

Comments

  • People practice Rooftop rain water harvesting which is used at household level for washing, bathing, small scale irrigation. Bamboo drip irrigation is another traditional practice by farmers of Khasi and Jaintia Hills which is still viable till date.
Meghalaya receives lot of rainfall, but the rainwater is mostly lost as run off due to the hilly terrain. If some technological intervention can be designed to tap the rainwater on a larger scale, purify and store it for use during the lean season, it could be one of the many ways to ensure water security in the state.

  • How do you think the runoff can be controlled or used in a more sustainable way?
Is the traditional practice of bamboo drip irrigation widely used in the whole state, if not why? If yes, how can we tap this practice in our model towards sustainability and water management.
